Books about Trains, Boats, Planes and Things that Go

Today our Discover & Explore topic is Things that Go!

This is always a favorite topic for young kids — cars, planes, boats, trains — anything they can ride, drive or fly.  It’s always fun to take kids on a new adventure whether it’s their first train ride, flight on a plane or boat tour.

Our kids just loved our first real train ride — we took Amtrak to a small town about an hour and a half away from our house.  Just enough to enjoy the experience of riding the rails.  It was so great to be able to do things as a family on the train.  We visited the dining car for a snack, played a game while in our seats and (of course) had a round of “I Spy” out the window.  Since no one had to drive, it truly was family time!

Books about Things that Go!

We have some favorite books when it comes to things that go.  Many of these stories will introduce kids to vehicles and forms of transportation that they may not experience until they are grown.  I don’t think I rode on a subway until I was in high school and I still haven’t ever taken a helicopter ride!

Browse through the list and find a few favorites to read — I’m including affiliate links so you can learn more about each of the books we’ve listed.

Try to schedule a new form of transportation on your next trip — maybe take a train or ride on a subway.  And be sure to ask the kids “If you could take a ride on any vehicle, which would it be?”  It’s always fun to hear their answer!

A favorite in our house, Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go includes almost any type of transportation you can think of (along with a few that just might surprise you!)  I’m a big fan of the fun illustrations along with the variety of real and fictional vehicles that show up in this book.  I personally would love to ride in an auto-plane 😉

I really like the Maisy’s Book of Things that Go: A Maisy First Science Book — it’s part of a series that introduces basic science concepts to young children.  This is an interactive book where kids can help Maisy pedal a bike, rock a boat and ride a trolley car!

A long time favorite that’s now in a great board book for younger kids, Go, Dog. Go!: P.D. Eastman’s Book of Things That Go is a fun way to learn about vehicles.  Follow these entertaining dogs as they all race to get to the party first!

A great book for toddlers and young kids is the Big Board First 100 Machines.  Bright colors, large pictures and simple text make this a fun read!

I always love to introduce kids to how things are done differently — not all kids take a bus to school.  In the book This Is the Way We Go to School: A Book About Children Around the World, the reader is introduced to a variety of ways that kids get to school.  And a big plus — the book lets you know the location of each child they highlight along with including a map so kids can locate the country as they read!

I also love this activity book — the Melissa & Doug Vehicles Reusable Sticker Pad!  Kids can choose a scene and fill it with transportation stickers.  Read a few of the books and then let kids go crazy and create their own ‘picture that goes!’  And it’s great that it’s reusable!
