In our house, summer comes in two phases:
Phase 1: The Honeymoon
A time when we all (parents & kids) are excited about no schedules, no school and long days together. We have a hand-ful of activities planned and a great summer bucket list of things we can’t wait to do — life is looking good!
Then 12 days later, we enter —
Phase 2: “What’s Next?!”
About two weeks into summer, we’ve already done more than half of the activities I had planned, the kids have read their entire stash of library books (that should have lasted them most of the summer) and we’ve made a huge dent in our bucket list.
The dreaded question usually comes over lunch — “Mom, what are we doing next?”
It’s at this point that I realize the honeymoon is over and we need to get a few more ideas into our plans or I’ll start to hear the “I’m bored” or “but he/she’s bugging me again” type of comments that I would rather avoid over summer break.
